The NHS is one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century - the words not of a Labour politician but of the Tory leader, David Cameron.

Speaking on the final day of the Conservatives' annual conference, he evoked memories of Tony Blair's "Education, education, education" pledge by using just three letters - "NHS" - to express his commitment to the health service.
