To go to the polls or not to go to the polls - one question Gordon Brown will be grappling with at the moment.

The question of an early general election was absent from Gordon Brown's speech, but it is one that the prime minister will be grappling with - urged by some advisers that there will never be a better time than now to win a proper mandate for his premiership.

But others counsel caution, pointing out that autumn days are short and dark - where it is hard to get out the Labour vote.

And while some backbench Labour MPs are champing at the bit, others have slim majorities which they are not so keen to test.

So what is a leader to do?
