How have the activities of a north-eastern property developer brought the police to the door of the second Labour prime minister in succession?

Tonight Gordon Brown's spokesman issued a statement saying: "The Labour Party will co-operate fully and in every way with the inquiry."

"What happened was unacceptable and it is in the public interest that every question is answered."
