The prime minister meets Labour MPs to head off a rebellion over the abolition of the 10p tax rate.

Gordon Brown is under siege from his own backbenchers. Labour whips are calling it a confidence issue.

Tonight the prime minister is at a meeting of the parliamentary Labour party in an effort to head off a rebellion over his tax changes.

He has been adamant there will be no U-turn over the abolition of the 10p tax rate. But earlier this evening treasury minister Yvette Cooper offered a small concession by promising to extend a poverty review.

Mr Brown will nevertheless have a hard job persuading the rebels.
