Gordon Brown apologises to the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan for what he called "unintended mistakes" in a handwritten letter of condolence.

He was "seeking to do the right thing", but Gordon Brown has made a personal apology to the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan for a hand-written letter of condolence which appeared to be littered with errors.

Jacqui Janes - whose son Jamie was killed in an explosion last month - described the letter as a "hastily scrawled insult" and complained that even her name at the top of the letter seemed to be misspelt.

But the prime minister said any mistakes had been unintended and he could only apologise if his handwriting was difficult to read.
