Gordon Brown moves to ease Labour fears over Boris Johnson's poll lead in the mayoral elections.
The prime minister has tried to calm the nerves of worried Labour backbenchers shaken by opinion polls suggesting that Boris Johnson could have as much as a 10-point lead over Ken Livingstone in the London mayoral election.
A short while ago he spoke to the parliamentary Labour party in the Commons.
Polling day is now just a month away, and together with the local elections in England and Wales it will be Gordon Brown's first electoral test as leader.
