Assistant whip Siobhain McDonagh sacked after leadership contest call
Updated on 12 September 2008
Gordon Brown sacks Siobhain McDonagh, the first member of his government to call publicly for a leadership contest.
Siobhain McDonagh, who was an assistant whip until this evening, is one of a group of Labour MPs demanding a contest ahead of the party's annual conference later this month.
Mr Brown is facing a general election wipeout, according to Channel 4 News' latest poll - and many Labour MPs are worried they'll lose their seats.
It would take 70 Labour MPs to trigger a contest by nominating an alternative leader.
