Pickets stand in front of schools, libraries, museums, and refuse depots as 500,000 workers across the UK begin their 48-hour pay dispute.

Concerns about the rising cost of living are at the heart of the council workers' strike across the country.

The Unite and Unison unions have called the strike over a 2.45 per cent pay offer, saying their members are facing a pay cut given that inflation stands at 3.8 per cent.

The unions claim local authorities could dip into their contingency reserves to maintain their employees' standard of living. A suggestion rejected by the employers.
