From 4-7 June 2009, 27 countries across Europe elected their representatives to the European Parliament to serve for the next five years.

In total 736 MEPs will be voted in under a range of proportional representation voting system.

In the UK 59 MEPs were in nine English regions, six in Scotland, four in Wales and three in Northern Ireland.

But how many MEPs are elected by each country and what political group in the European Parliament do they support? Find out with our interactive map.

Groups within the European Parliament

PPE-DE: Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats. (UK members are from the Conservative Party)

PSE: Socialist Group in the European Parliament (UK members are from the Labour Party)

ALDE: Groups of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (UK members are from the Liberal Democrats)

UEN: Union for Europe of the Nations Group (no UK representatives)

ID: Independence/Democracy Group (UK member are from the UK Independence Party, UKIP)

GRN-ALE: Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance (UK members are from the Green Party, Plaid Cymru and the Scottish National Party)

GUE-NGL: Confederation Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left

NI: Non-attached Members
