A major rescue operation launched after reports of a light aircraft crashing into the sea turned out to be a false alarm sparked by two inflatable penguin balloons, coastguards have revealed.

Three coastguard teams, a lifeboat and helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth were dispatched after a member of the public reported a possible microlight crash off Rosehearty in Aberdeenshire.

But when the lifeboat arrived at the scene all the crew found were the 3ft, deflated, penguin balloons.
