Updated on 06 March 2009
Scientists have uncovered evidence that horses were milked 5,500 years ago, it has been revealed.
The team of archaeologists, led by experts at the Universities of Exeter and Bristol, have discovered the earliest known evidence that horses were domesticated.
The researchers traced the origins of horse domestication back to the Botai Culture of Kazakhstan around 5,500 years ago, which is around 1,000 years earlier than thought and about 2,000 years earlier than domestic horses are known to have been in Europe.
