A robot has been built which regularly punches its creator in the head and body.
Engineer Sami Haddadin is not into mechanised masochism. He is trying to develop robots that know if they have hurt someone.
The project has echoes of sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov's first law of robotics, a commandment designed to prevent robots turning on their masters.
