A grim day for Scotland's proud banking sector.

It's a huge blow for Scotland's financial sector - its two major banks effectively taken over by Westminster. But the political impact is yet to sink in.



The Scottish National Party - campaigning for a referendum on independence - once talked of wanting Scotland to be part of an "arc of prosperity", including Iceland, now on the verge of bankruptcy and Ireland, no longer so robust.

It's all raising questions over how an independent Scotland would have coped - without the resources to mount a rescue package of its own.
