Millions are spending hundreds of millions of pounds in the sales - but will it be enough to stop the predicted shrink in the economy?
As one think-tank warns of a 60-year low in growth, the message from the government, and some economists, has been - spend spend spend - exhorting us to get the economy moving again.
So they will have been relieved to see queues of shoppers outside some stores today.
But has there been the right kind of spending?
And can the sales, which save us money, save the shops?
