UK stock market sees biggest one-day jump since 1984

Updated on 19 September 2008

By Katie Razzall

The British stock market bounces back in spectacular fashion.

Coming near to reversing this week's losses with the biggest one-day jump since 1984, financial stocks gained the most with some rising by more than 50 per cent at one point.

The government has not ruled out following the Americans by launching its own rescue plan, but Number 10 said today that "decisive action" had already been taken.

It also now looks as though mortgage rates are going to rise for homeowners.
