Strike threat prompts fuel fears

By Andy Davies

Updated on 23 April 2008

The possibility of a strike at the Grangemouth oil refinery prompts warnings about possible fuel shortages.

A second day of talks has yielded no deal as efforts to avert a strike at a critical UK oil refinery continue.

Both the owners of the Grangemouth plant, Ineos, and the union, Unite, have issued dire warnings about possible fuel shortages affecting Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England.

The two-day strike, set to start on Sunday, was called after the company announced plans to close its final salary pension scheme.

Managers have already started shutting down the Falkirk refinery in preparation.
