A third day of industrial action over pay has resulted in shortages at around 8 per cent of petrol stations.

But there has been little sign of panic buying.

Talks aimed at resolving the strike by Shell tanker drivers will resume tomorrow.

But the strike is hitting some areas worse than others and supply is tightest in the south west of England, especially Cornwall and Somerset; the north west of England, particularly around the Stanlow Refinery and the central belt of Scotland.

By midday today, 647 of the country's 8,700 petrol stations had run out of one or more grades of fuel. 249 of those are Shell stations.

And demand for fuel yesterday was up by a third compared to a normal Saturday.
