Shoppers hit by debit card glitch

Lloyds TSB customers had last-minute Christmas shopping plans thwarted when a technical fault meant they could not use their debit cards.

A problem at the bank meant that, for about an hour during Tuesday morning, certain transactions made using one of the group's debit cards were declined.

Lloyds refused to say how many customers were hit, but stressed that the problem had been fixed.

It added that the fault only affected certain transactions, although it would not give details on which ones, adding that the problem occurred for only around an hour.

A spokeswoman said: "We had a technical issue this morning for a short period of time which meant that some debit card transactions were declined in error.

"We have fixed the problem and all transactions are now being processed normally. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused customers."

The issue is likely to have caused problems for people who had been doing last-minute Christmas shopping.

The group has 16 million customers in total, many of whom will hold their current account with the bank.
