Services disrupted as council workers strike over pay offer

Schools close and local services are disrupted as hundreds of thousands of council staff strike over pay.
The industrial action, which extended across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, was called after unions rejected a below-inflation rise, saying the big increases in the cost of food and fuel meant staff were being offered a pay cut.
But employers said strikes had been limited to a small minority of schools, with only a quarter of staff taking action.
At the same time, the latest unemployment figures showed the biggest monthly rise for 16 years.
