Ryanair passengers to squat on stools?

Updated on 06 July 2009

Never one to miss out on a money-making opportunity, Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary says stools could be introduced on flights.

The Irish budget airline is looking at the possibility of getting some passengers to squat on stools in a bid to increase capacity.

The carrier says those passengers would pay less than others in "normal" seats, or possibly even fly for free.

Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said Mr O'Leary, the company's chief executive, has already been in touch with aircraft manufacturer Boeing to see if such a scheme is feasible.

Mr McNamara said: "If it's possible, if we can get the IAA (Irish Aviation Authority) to approve it and if it can reduce fares even further we will be doing it."

Mr O'Leary said he got the idea from the Chinese airline Spring, which said it could squeeze 50 per cent more passengers on board and cut costs by 20 per cent.
