PM: tax hike not end of New Labour

Gordon Brown denies that the budget had sounded the death knell for the New Labour political project, saying this morning: "What we are about is aspiration." Andrew Thomas reports.

Critics had said that the new 50p top rate of tax was a return to the old politics of class war, but Prime Minister Gordon Brown said it was bold action to fuel recovery.

And there is evidence today that the public has been convinced.

A Populus poll seen by this programme has found more people are convinced that Brown and the chancellor can manage the economy properly.

But they are less convinced by Alistair Darling's predictions about growth.
