Plastic bags could be banned
Updated on 15 November 2007
Supermarkets have defended their green credentials amid growing pressure for a total ban on plastic bags.
Tesco claims it has reduced the number by a quarter by offering loyalty points to customers as an incentive.
Sainsbury's has given away 9 million re-usable bags.
But free disposable carriers could be banned in the capital under an agreed council leaders' proposal.
The cross-party London Councils group approved a private Bill to encourage eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags.
The Bill says free, throwaway shopping bags should not be distributed in the capital.
Shops would instead be able to sell disposable carriers with any profits ideally going to environmental projects.
