Petrol prices rise again

Updated on 01 April 2007

Source PA News

Petrol prices have pushed past the 90p per litre mark for the first time this year.

The national average is now 90.28p per litre, having started the year at 88.32p, the AA said.

The lowest figure this year for petrol was on February 1 when it was 86.0p a litre - a price last seen in June 2005.

Average diesel prices are now 93.34p per litre. But the gap between the price of petrol and diesel has closed from 5.26p at the beginning of the year to 3.06p.

Last year, UK average petrol prices hung at around 90p per litre from January 22 until March 15, before soaring more than 4p in a month.

Paul Watters, head of public affairs at AA, said: "Drivers are keeping their fingers crossed that petrol history doesn't repeat itself this Easter, although the dispute with Iran doesn't bode well for fuel prices.

"How long it continues will be the key to whether the current rise is a short-term blip or a longer-term headache."

He went on: "Our mid-March fuel report showed that supermarkets had put a brake on petrol price rises to try to restore customer confidence in their fuel following the contamination scare.

"Easter will tell whether they ease the impact of higher oil prices on drivers or let their prices rise more in line with other retailers.

"Although the closing of the price gap between diesel and petrol is excellent news for diesel car owners, we wonder if that difference will narrow further. Fuel wholesale prices in other parts of the world indicate a complete switch in petrol and diesel prices, with petrol now the more expensive."
