Pay boost for apprentices

Updated on 09 September 2008

The minimum pay of apprentices is to increase by £15 a week to £95, the Government has announced.

The move will benefit 26,000 people in England on apprenticeships from August 2009, mainly in less well-paid sectors including hairdressing and social care.

Skills Secretary John Denham made the announcement at the TUC Congress in Brighton, saying the Government had "rescued" apprenticeships.

"We have trebled the number of people taking them up since 1997.

"We will go on to make sure they are a mainstream option for all young people and adults in England."

The move was welcomed by TUC general secretary Brendan Barber, who said: "This will be a welcome boost for the thousands of low-paid apprentices, particularly women, who are struggling to make ends meet."
