A shopping trip to the Big Apple could cut Christmas spending by hundreds of pounds, figures have shown.

The weak dollar means a selection of 19 popular consumer goods are around 30% cheaper on average than in London, according to price comparison website PriceRunner.co.uk.

An iPod Classic was nearly £32 cheaper in New York at an average price of £127.09.

Shoppers could pay nearly £107 less for a Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS camera which is priced at an average £146.30 in the Big Apple.

The Transformers Optimus Prime voice changer helmet is £14.20 cheaper in New York than the £29.83 average price in London.

Other big savings on electrical goods include a DVD player - the LG BH100 - priced at an average £459.11 in New York compared with £916.65 in London.

And the latest Nokia phone called the N95 would set shoppers in London back £509.96 on average compared with £352.33 in New York.

The PriceRunner figures were collected last month and calculated according to Bank of England exchange rates for that time.

This means the prices pre-date last week's 26-year high for the pound at above 2.10 US dollars.

A survey of prices in 29 cities around the globe by PriceRunner found London was second most expensive behind Oslo, Norway.
