Northern Rock: sinking like a stone?

Government loans to Northern Rock top £25bn as savers go on taking their money out.

New figures indicate Northern Rock has now borrowed around £25bn from the Bank of England - an increase of £2bn over the last week.

This comes as the board of Northern Rock prepares to receive detailed bids tomorrow from any company interested in taking it over.

But there's growing speculation over whether Bank of England support for the Rock will have to continue even if it is bought by another financial group.
