No immediate help over 10p tax rate

Updated on 20 April 2008

By Roz Upton

Alistair Darling has ruled out making concessions for those affected by the 10p tax band.

He said he cannot re-write the Budget but he will return to the issue.

His response signalled to the 70 Labour rebels on the abolition of the 10p tax rate that he will help the low-paid who lose out but not until the autumn at the earliest.

That was welcomed by some of the concerned Labour MPs whom Channel 4 News spoke to but in no way satisfied others who demanded details of how the treasury will compensate some of the 5 million who've lost out.
