Nearly a third of Britons are failing to set aside time to ensure they are making the most of their finances, a survey has shown.

Around 30% of people admitted they were not organised when it came to their financial affairs, but only 3% of people said if they had more time they would use it to get their money in order, according to insurer Friends Provident.

Two-thirds of people said they were planning to tighten their belts this year in the face of rising costs, but only 33% said they planned to set aside more time to overhaul their finances.

In fact, 83% of the 1,000 people questioned claimed time was more precious to them than money.

Peter Timberlake, head of public relations at Friends Provident, said: "Talk of recession, the ongoing impact of the credit crunch and rising prices for both fuel and food are all contributing to financial uncertainty for many people.

"However, a little bit of time spent checking their finances could help them overcome these concerns."
