"Stronger than at any other previous downturn" or heading for a "record budget deficit". Gordon Brown and David Cameron have given starkly contrasting views of Britain's ability to cope with the economic crisis.

Britain is now widely thought to be in recession.

Official figures due on Friday are expected to show that between June and September the country suffered its first quarter of negative growth since 1992.
