Surging fuel bills and growing food costs see the cost of living rise by its biggest monthly jump in seven years.

The Consumer Prices Index, which is the government's preferred measure of inflation, hit three per cent in April, up half a per cent.

The Retail Price Index, which includes housing costs, also rose to 4.2 per cent.

The figures surprised analysts and will make it harder for the Bank of England to cut interest rates.
