House prices beside the seaside up
Updated on 16 June 2007
House prices in an Ayrshire seaside town have outperformed coastal resorts in every other part of the UK, a leading bank has revealed.
The average cost of a home in Girvan rose by 41% over the past year and now comes in at £131,512, according to the Bank of Scotland.
More than three quarters of Scotland's seaside towns saw an increase of at least 10% in their average house price.
The figures also showed house-hunters have pushed prices up in the other top-performing seaside towns of Arbroath in Angus and Ardrossan in Ayrshire.
Arbroath shot up 30% over the past 12 months to £116,362, while the average price of a home in Ardrossan rose 28% to £103,184.
Researchers found Scottish seaside towns were among the best performers in Britain, accounting for six of the 10 biggest price rises over the past year.
Elsewhere in Scotland, Eyemouth in the Borders witnessed the strongest rise in the UK over the past three years, with an increase of 82% to £155,278.
North Berwick, in East Lothian, remains the most expensive seaside town north of the border, with an average house price of £255,046.
It is closely followed by university town St Andrews, which boasts an average house price of £223,894.
Out of the 10 largest increases across Britain over three years, the top nine were all in Scotland, the bank said.
