Marks & Spencer prepares to announce 1,000 job cuts as new sales figures reveal a fall in pre-Christmas spending.

A thousand jobs are to go at Marks & Spencer, Channel 4 News has learned, as the retail giant prepares to unveil its Christmas trading figures tomorrow.

Union leaders are seeking urgent talks with company bosses.

Although the job cuts make up a small percentage of the store's 72,000 staff, it is yet another gloomy signal for Britain's high street that the worst is yet to come.
