The government unveils plans for a major expansion of Heathrow airport, including a third runway and sixth terminal.

The plans involve the complete demolition of a village - all so that the number of take-offs and landings at Heathrow can be increased from 480,000 a year to more than 700,000 by 2030.

The transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, warned that if expansion wasn not allowed to go ahead, Heathrow's status as a world-class airport would be eroded, jobs would be lost and the economy would suffer.

But she promised that the expansion proposal would have to meet tough local environmental tests on noise and air quality.
