Girl guides to be given cash advice
Updated on 05 January 2009
Girl guides are being issued with tips to survive the credit crunch to ensure they stay prepared for the modern world.
Guides have been advised to avoid store cards, fashion fads and relying on their parents for handouts. Instead they should budget carefully, think twice about purchases and cut down on little extras such as shop bought coffees and chewing gum.
The no-nonsense advice is the first in a series of guides to help young women with some of the most pressing issues they face. Money management was chosen as the subject for the first leaflet after a poll of young members by Girlguiding UK found that 93% thought it was the one skill every girl should have.
David Whitely from the Financial Services Authority said, "This is a very helpful initiative from Girlguiding as we believe it's important for young people to learn the basics on how to manage money early on. They will then have more confidence when it comes to making more important money decisions as they get older."
The guides are aimed at girls between 16 and 18 and will all be produced in conjunction with expert partners to look at issues relevant to today's girls.
Denise King, chief executive of Girlguiding UK said: "As UK's largest organisation providing a safe female-only space for girls and young women, we see it as our responsibility to give girls and young women the knowledge to confidently and knowledgeably deal with the new experiences they face growing up."
The Guiding's Guide to Managing Money advises shopping around to see which banks offer the best deals, avoiding the debt trap through loans and store cards and bargain hunting, among other tips.
