Funding row over EU satellite plans
Updated on 21 September 2007
A European space initiative aimed at providing the European Union with a GPS system to rival America's, is under fire today for a plan to bail it out using EU funds intended for agriculture.
Delayed and over-budget, the Galileo satellite navigation project needs to find two-point-four billion euros - and French politicians have suggested taking the money from the EU farming budget to keep the scheme alive.
Both Britain and Germany are opposed to the move, which they believe would set a dangerous precedent for future projects.
