EDF first to deal consumers 'hammer blow' with big energy price rise

By John Sparks

Updated on 25 July 2008

EDF becomes the first energy company to announce huge rises in gas and electricity prices, blaming a record rise in wholesale costs.

The French firm, one of Britain's biggest energy suppliers, said the average duel fuel bill would go up by almost £200 a year.

Campaigners warned the scale of the increase would be a "hammer blow" for consumers.

It's not good news for the prime minister either who has blamed rising fuel and food prices for the Glasgow East by-election defeat.
