EDF deal will reduce 'reliance on oil and gas' - but what about renewables?
Updated on 24 September 2008
British Energy is to be sold to French state-owned EDF, which includes plans for four new nuclear reactors.
It's a controversial deal that will see a French state-owned company take over Britain's nuclear industry, with plans already in place to build four new reactors.
To the government, EDF's agreement to buy British Energy guarantees that nuclear power will continue to have a major role in generating electricity. Thereby making the country less reliant on oil and gas and helping to combat greenhouse gas emissions.
But environmentalists say ministers are on the wrong track and should be looking to renewable to tackle climate change.
