Eco-town controversy

Updated on 28 June 2008

By Julian Rush

The government wants ten new "eco-towns" to be purpose-built from scratch in the next ten years.

They're supposed to be environmentally-friendly, but critics say plans are riding rough-shod over local processes and have the flimsiest of green credentials.

One of them is planned for Cambridgeshire, where a consortium of property developers, backed by Tesco, wants to build 8,000 homes on fields.

Tesco wants to build a superstore there too, and has been in negotiations with the government about the develpment.
