Britain's economy suffers its worst quarterly decline since the late 1970s, with official figures showing that GDP fell by 1.9 per cent in the first three months of the year.

The figures are far worse than Treasury forecast and cast doubt on the chancellor's predictions of future economic growth, just two days after the budget.

Some economists claim, however, that there are signs Britain may have reached the bottom of the recession.
