Cookie crumbles at Burton's Foods site

The supplier of Wagon Wheels and Jammie Dodgers is shedding 660 jobs as it ends biscuit production at one of its factories.

Burton's Foods, the second largest biscuit supplier in the UK, will stop production of Cadbury's chocolate biscuits at its site in Moreton, Wirral.

Around 300 jobs will remain at the plant as it continues production of other products.

Chief executive Paul Kitchener said: "We sincerely regret the loss of jobs that may occur as a result of our review.

"While Burton's Foods is a successful business, we operate in a highly competitive environment against a backdrop of overcapacity in the UK biscuit market.

"This proposal in no way reflects the commitment of our employees at Moreton."

Burton's Foods, which was bought by private equity firm Duke Street Capital earlier this year, has 2,400 workers in Moreton, Blackpool, Edinburgh and Llantarnam, South Wales.
