Consumer prices index shows record rise in monthly inflation to 4.4 per cent

Updated on 12 August 2008

By James Blake

The official rate of inflation registers a record 0.6 per cent rise to 4.4 per cent in July.

The Consumer Prices Index figure, first compiled in 1997, rose last month by 0.6 per cent on the level in June.

That is more than twice the government's 2 per cent target and will increase pressure for a rise rather than a cut in interest rates.
