Cigarette ban delayed

Updated on 09 December 2008

By Cathy Newman

Measure to ban cigarettes from shop display won't come into force fully until 2013.

Tobacco products are to be kept out of sight, to be sold "under the counter" instead, and cigarette vending machines will be curbed as part of an attempt to cut down on the number of young people smoking.

Health secretary Alan Johnson has introduced the measures, but business secretary, Lord Mandelson, is reported to have expressed concerns about the impact of the restrictions on small businesses, prompting the delay in introducing the measures.
