Cheaper travel for the unemployed
Updated on 14 January 2009
Fare concessions for the unemployed are to be extended, London mayor Boris Johnson has announced.
Londoners on income support are already eligible for half-price fares on the capital's buses and trams.
Mr Johnson said that from April 1, Londoners in receipt of jobseeker's allowance or the new employment and support allowance would get the same concessions.
It is expected that the extension - costing £3 million - will mean a further 150,000 Londoners being able to benefit over the next 12 months.
Mr Johnson said: "The severity of the economic downturn and its sharp impact on Londoners has required urgent practical action."
