Chancellor Darling admits downturn is worse than he thought

The chancellor warns that tax payers are nearing the limit of what they want to pay.

The Chancellor Alistair Darling has said the economic downturn is far more profound than he had thought. He has warned his cabinet colleagues: "They've got to manage with the money they've got".

Speaking to The Times Mr Darling said tax payers were nearing the limit of what they wanted to pay.

He also revealed cheering himself up this week with a concert by Leonard Cohen - the songwriter who famously sang "I've seen the future brother. It is murder".
