Alistair Darling postpones October's proposed 2p fuel duty hike

Updated on 16 July 2008

By Emily Reuben

After heavy hints from Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling postpones the proposed 2p rise in fuel duty.

In his statement the chancellor said the move would help motorists and businesses "get through what is a difficult time for everyone" given that "sharp rises in world oil prices have pushed up prices at the pumps".

The treasury has been under pressure from motorists and the opposition to drop the rise, due to come in this October, but had resisted the move until now.
