A £6.9 million National Lottery prize has remained unclaimed as the deadline to pick up the cash passed.

No one had come forward with the winning Euromillions jackpot ticket by 5.30pm on Wednesday - so the cash will go to good causes.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, I can confirm that the ticket-holder did not come forward within the deadline to claim their prize and has now sadly missed out on this substantial amount of money."

The spokesperson continued: "To avoid this unfortunate situation happening again, I would urge all National Lottery players to check their tickets on a regular basis. We tried very hard to find the ticket-holder and it's a real shame that they have missed out, but there is still one winner - the nation.

"This money will now go to the good causes, adding to the £20 billion which, over the last 13 years, has funded the biggest programme of civic regeneration seen in the UK since the 19th Century."

Over the last few days the National Lottery urged everyone to have a thorough search of home, possessions and clothing just in case they held the ticket - which was bought in Devon.

The winning EuroMillions ticket, which matched five main numbers and one Lucky Star number, is from the draw on September 28 last year.

The £88 million mega-jackpot could not roll over and had to be won that night. That night's winning EuroMillions numbers were 22, 30, 34, 35, 44 and the Lucky Star numbers were 4 and 5.

In the end, six UK tickets-holders each pocketed a £6.9 million share of the EuroMillions jackpot, when it rolled down to the next winning prize level.

With all National Lottery draws, players have 180 days from the day of the draw to claim their prize if they have the winning ticket.
