6,000 car jobs 'may be axed'

Updated on 20 February 2009

By John Sparks, Krishnan Guru-Murthy

The union Unite says a major British car plant will shut down "within days'" unless the government steps in to bail it out.

Six thousand car making jobs are set to go but no one yet knows where.

Union boss Tony Woodley said revealing exactly which plant and which firm owns it could hasten its closure.

The job cuts are being blamed on the huge slump in demand. Last month UK car production plummeted by almost 60 per cent compared with January last year.
