Jared Leto has revealed how his new film role as the killer of John Lennon has changed him forever.

The actor piled on over four stones to play Mark Chapman, the man who murdered the famous Beatle in 1980.

Chapter 27 tells the story of the days leading up to the event in New York, which made instant news around the world.

Leto has vowed never to put himself through the experience, describing it as mentally and physically tough.

He said: "It was probably the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. Physically for sure and mentally it wasn't too easy either. It was a role that I new from the very beginning would test the limits of who I was as an artist, as a human being, and it certainly did that.

"It was a miserable, miserable experience but at the end of the day a really rewarding one as well."

Chapter 27 is out in the US on March 28.
