When it premiered in St Petersburg in 1892, it wasn't an instant hit, but since then it has become a staple of the ballet repertory.
The Nutcracker has become a staple of the ballet repertory.
It remains a magical treat for children, and a somewhat gruelling test for the dancers, none more so than for the 'Sugar Plum Fairy', the glittering star of the show.
This year the Royal Ballet is staging a version by the veteran choreographer, Sir Peter Wright, at the Royal Opera House.
