Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted she had concerns about her career after taking time off to raise her children.
The Oscar-winning actress, who is married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and has two children, Moses and Apple, is in Cannes as her latest movies, Iron Man and Two Lovers, hit the big screen.
Paltrow, who stars opposite Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man, says she had been worried about being forgotten after more than two years away from Tinseltown.
She said: "There's always somebody who's younger or hotter or prettier. I really did not know if there would be a place for me any more. If you're a woman and especially if you're not 25, Hollywood is pretty cut-throat.
"I was very realistic about the fact that there might not be any more room for me. I definitely knew I had lost my place when I left."
Two Lovers, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, was written by Jim Gray with Paltrow in mind and is in the competition for this year's Palme D'Or.
